The Houston Astros signed their ninth-round pick, catcher Brian Holberton from the University of North Carolina, according to his mother, Tobie.
Holberton chose to sign with the Astros rather than return to UNC for his senior season.
"He signed last night," said Tobie Holberton, who also acted as her son's advisor. "It's thrilling."
"His dad and I really weren't prepared for this. We Knew he was probably going to be drafted, but we were not informed that it was going to be as high as it was. We just thought he would be drafted and he'll go back for his senior year. We are very proud of Brian. Since he was little he was always crazy about baseball."
Brian Holberton, who helped UNC get to the College World Series, hit .308 with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs.
