AG: 2 NY adult home workers assaulted 88-year-old

Posted: Updated:

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) — Two employees of a Long Island adult home have been indicted on charges they assaulted a disabled 88-year-old resident.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced the indictments of licensed practical nurse Raquel Bouton and aide Laura Harper.

Schneiderman says the 43-year-old Bouton and the 58-year-old Harper assaulted the man on March 24, 2012 in the home where they worked in Port Jefferson Station.

He says they tied the man's hands together, punched him and held a pillow over his face.

The charges against the women include second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person. Both women pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

Attorneys for the women said the allegations are entirely unfounded.

Bouton and Harper face sentences of three and a half to seven years if convicted.

Three Nassau County beaches have been closed to bathing due to heavy rainfall. County health officials say storm water runoff can elevate bacterial levels and affect bathing water quality. The three South Shore beaches that were closed Monday are: Hewlett Point Beach; Island Park Beach; and Merrick Estates Civic Association. In addition, Biltmore and Philip Healey beaches in Massapequa remain closed to bathing due to elevated levels of bacteria.
