Ft. Stewart among US bases losing Army brigade

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia will lose 1 of its three combat brigades under the Army's plan to reduce its forces by 2017.

Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army chief of staff, named Fort Stewart on Tuesday among 10 Army posts that will shrink under a restructuring plan to cut a total of 80,000 soldiers.

Fort Stewart, home of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. It has about 24,000 soldiers.

Army brigades typically have 3,500 to 5,000 soldiers. But losses at Fort Stewart and other bases will be somewhat offset by adding battalions of 600 to 800 troops to surviving brigades.

Chris Crawford, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, says Fort Stewart will see a net loss of about 1,300 soldiers.
