SW Ga. county wants to name road for fallen Marine

Posted: Updated:

LEESBURG, Ga. (AP) - County officials in southwest Georgia are looking to name a road or possibly a stretch of highway for a local Marine killed in Afghanistan last year.

WALB-TV reports Lee County commissioners are discussing renaming a portion of state Highway 19 for Lance Cpl. Steve Sutton. The young Marine, whose family lives in the county, was killed in combat in May 2012.

Commissioner Greg Frich says naming a stretch of Highway 19 for Sutton is appealing because his funeral procession traveled that route.

Local officials are working with Sutton's family. His father says Sutton wouldn't have wanted the attention, but it's helped ease the loss.

Lee County officials say if they choose a state route for the honor it will require approval by the Georgia Legislature.
