How well do you know your way around a grocery store? A Houston mom is making it her mission to teach others how to shop for healthy, 20 minute meals. You may be surprised to see who is in her summer class.
Gabrielle Welch, author of The Pizza Trap, is taking 11 and 12-year-old girls on grocery store tours all summer long to learn the basics of healthy eating.
She goes over three key tips:
1.) Know the dirty dozen list
"There are certain fruits and vegetables you need to buy organic because they have a high level of pesticides," she says.
2.) Stick to the store's perimeter
"I want the girls to understand they can walk through the outside of the store, just the fruits and veggies section, meat section and be able to make an entire meal with nothing out of a bag or box."
3.) Put a rainbow of colors in your cart
"It's really important to daily get something red, something yellow, orange and something green because those different color foods help different parts of our body."
