ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -

The New York Senate has confirmed Thomas Prendergast as chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the Senate's confirmation Thursday night.

Since January, Prendergast had served as the MTA interim executive director. He succeeded Joseph Lhota, a Republican who resigned from the position to run for mayor.

Prendergast said in a statement the MTA faces challenges, such as improving service and rebuilding from Superstorm Sandy.

Prendergast has been CEO at TransLink in Vancouver, B.C., and began his career with the Chicago Transit Authority. He has also worked with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

He spent more than three years as president of MTA New York City Transit and six years as president of the Long Island Rail Road.

The idea is grand: to take the 7 train and connect Queens to Manhattan to New Jersey. But as with all these massive projects, the chorus gets quiet when asked who will to pay for it. While business interests announced plans of an economic impact study, no one has even a ballpark number for a price tag.

HELMET VIDEO: Cyclist wipes out on taxi door

With a camera mounted to his helmet, a cyclist headed northbound on 4th Avenue in Manhattan. As he neared East 14th Street, the taxi door swung open and the cyclist slammed into the door and went down. But it's the aftermath where things got weird in an "Only in New York" kind of way as the blame game started. The cab driver was upset because he said his door was damaged.
