Teen killed trying to save his mother

Posted: Updated:

A 16-year old boy is stabbed to death. Police say he was trying to save his mother from her ex-boyfriend. Baytown police detectives say 43-year-old Dene McCarter's girlfriend broke up with him three weeks ago but they say he wouldn't leave her alone and kept going to her apartment. Yesterday neighbors say McCarter came back again. This time when he left the apartment police say the woman was left stabbed, barely alive and her 16-year-old son Prezton Edwards was dead after attempting to defend her.

What started as a Happy Father's Day ended in one of the most horrifying night's anyone could imagine. "I started hearing this screaming and commotion and everybody's frantic inside. So I run to the door and I open it up like what's going on and does anyone need help and the family comes out and the woman's covered in blood," explains neighbor Chase Maynard. Maynard had been out front barbecuing for the holiday when he says he saw McCarter, his neighbor's ex-boyfriend walk into her apartment. Seconds later came the screams.

"My mom was a single mother and I've seen her get beat on by boyfriend's. So initially I was going to go stop it. I thought he was assaulting her so I was going to go get him and go toe to toe with him," Maynard explains but it was far worse.

Investigators say McCarter walked into his ex-girlfriend's Baytown apartment, went straight to her bedroom and started stabbing her. Her 16-year old son Prezton Edwards ran to his mother's rescue and was stabbed in the throat. "I just take my shirt off, put it on his neck and I lay him down and I'm putting pressure on it and he's telling me it hurts, I can't breathe and I'm like I know son but you have to stay awake. You can't pass out," says Maynard.

The woman's four children, her nephew and one neighborhood child were all right there during the violent attack. "He (my brother) ran in the house crying. He was here when it happened and he had blood all on his shoes and stuff," explains 15 year old neighbor Natassja Davis.

The mother stumbled outside and passed out. Her son Prezton was barely concious. "He's telling me I can't breathe it hurts and I'm like I know son but I'm here and I'm holding him as tight as I can," says Maynard. Soon the words stopped and the 16-year-old's body went limp. "I'm like hurt to see my best friend lying dead there," says Davis.

"Words can't even describe the way I feel right now. He was like a brother to me," says 16-year-old neighbor Dezalai Cormier.

"I'm telling you when I reflect on it it's spooky because he (McCarter) was calm going in and just as calm going out. I saw him come out with the knife. I got his license plate number and gave it to 911 dispatch," says Maynard. He says before now his biggest memory of the family was seeing them dressed up and going to church on Sunday's.

Prezton Edwards was in tenth grade at Ross Sterling High School. His friends describe him as sweet, respectful and kind-hearted. "I wish I could have done more. I wanted to keep this boy alive and I just wasn't able to. I feel guilty," explains Maynard.

Prezton's mom is now in the hospital in stable condition. McCarter, who also has children, is now arrested.

Investigators say instead of enjoying father's day with his children he was stabbing his ex-girlfriend and killing her 16-year old son.
