A lifeguard has died after deputies he swam underwater in a Katy-area pool.

Dustin Kruthaupt, 19, was swimming laps in the Rosewood Recreation Center pool on Cinco Terrace Drive near Fiona Sky Lane late on Saturday afternoon when other lifeguards saw him surface and dragged him out of the pool when his body began floating.

Witnesses reported to deputies that Kruthaupt at one point tried to swim the distance of the pool underwater.

The lifeguards were administering CPR to Kruthaupt when Fort Bend County Sheriff's deputies arrived to the pool after 4 p.m.

After firefighters with the Fulshear Simonton Fire Department arrived and continued to administer CPR to Kruthaupt, a Fort Bend County EMS crew took him to Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital.

A doctor pronounced Kruthaupt at around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Deputies initially report that no signs of foul play were evident in the incident, but an autopsy was ordered.
