LIRR to expand onboard credit-card program

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - The Long Island Rail Road is expanding a program that allows conductors to accept onboard credit card transactions.

On July 3, the railroad will start to increase the number of iPhone-powered devices that conductors use to swipe credit cards.

An extra on-board purchase fee will still be applied for customers who board at stations that have ticket-vending machines.

Newsday says that when customers find themselves without cash and a credit card, conductors can use the device to scan their driver's licenses. Then the LIRR sends them a bill.
