Leach's agent: 'Texans express interest in Vonta'

Posted: Updated:

While free agent fullback Vonta Leach meets with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, his agent said Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith told him the Texans do have interest in his client, but they have to find a way to maneuver under the salary cap to make it happen.

Leach was released on Tuesday by the Baltimore Ravens in a salary-cap move and his agent, Ralph Vitolo, reached out to the Texans to gauge their interest about the three-time All-Pro fullback returning to Houston.

Leach, who told FOX 26 Sports returning to the Texans is his first choice, played with Houston from 2006-2010.

"We just talked and (Rick Smith) mentioned that he definitely had an interest in Vonta," Vitolo said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

"He said that it would be beneficial for all of us if we could get him back down there. It's just a matter of 'how we can do it money-wise and when can we do it and if we can do it.'

"We all agree that we want him back there, but how do we do it?"

Vitolo said Smith responded on Wednesday to Vitolo's request to talk about Leach.

"It's a mutual interest," Vitolo said. "He felt the whole organization would benefit from getting Vonta back there.

"He thinks it's a win-win. He's a difference-maker. He said 'it's not just me, it's the entire organization.' "

Vitolo said seven teams have expressed interest in Leach, including the Texans and Dolphins who are meeting with Leach.

"There are seven teams that have contacted me expressing interest," Vitolo said. "You have to look at the free agent market to establish your worth and see where you're comfortable at.

"With Houston it's different. He's been there. He knows the people. He knows the organization. He doesn't have to visit."

Vitolo said the other teams expressing interest include the N.Y. Giants, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Cleveland Browns.
