Fireworks in house forces evacuations

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Undercover police conducting a sting say they discovered fireworks stacked from floor to ceiling in the basement of a house in Westchester County.

The owner of the house on Saldi Lane in Mount Pleasant was arrested late Monday night.

Stephen Surace, 53, faces multiple charges including including criminal possession of a weapon reckless endangerment and unlawfully dealing in fireworks.

Footage from the scene Tuesday afternoon showed law enforcement teams removing boxes from the massive home.

"Based on the volume of material and the potential explosive hazard, the decision was made to move immediately to arrest Mr. Surace and secure the home," Public Safety Commissioner George Longworth said.

Nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution and surrounding streets were closed as the county police hazardous devices unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives worked at the scene.

The fireworks, including many that were commercial-grade, were discovered after an undercover Westchester County Police officer purchased $1,000 worth of fireworks from Surace inside his home, according to police.

Surace was expected to be arraigned in Mount Pleasant Town Court on Tuesday.  Fox 5 News reported that Surace is a Little League Coach.
