MD Anderson Cancer specialist accused of poisoning colleague

Posted: Updated:

An MD Anderson doctor is arrested after allegedly poisoning her colleague, a doctor she was dating. Cancer specialist Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo is now out of jail on a $50,000 bond after investigators say she poisoned her lover, Dr. George Blumenschein. The two physicians work together at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

According to the probable cause report the doctors had "a casual sexual relationship". At Gonzalez-Angulo's Southside Place townhome investigators say she gave Dr. Blumenschein a cup of coffee that "tasted sweet". The probable cause report goes on to say Blumenschein told Dr. Gonzalez-Angulo he preferred black coffee. She allegedly said she "put Splenda in it" and made him another cup. Blumenschein says he drank both cups of coffee, both tasted sweet and and within four hours he says he had slurred speech, poor balance and loss of fine motor skills.

Sixteen hours later he was rushed to emergency and admitted to the hospital where he was having issues with his heart, lungs, central nervous system and suffering kidney failure.

After a number of tests doctors found evidence that Blumenschein was poisoned with ethylene glycol. It's a toxic, colorless, odorless, syrupy sweet tasting chemical used in automobile anti-freeze. According to investigators ethylene glycol is available in all the labs at MD Anderson.

Dr. Gonazalez-Angulo's neighbors say they are stunned. "We're very surprised. It's a shocking thing to hear that in our neighborhood but you know doctors are humans too i guess," says neighbor and retired doctor Sucheta Thukral.

MD Anderson says Dr. Gonzalez-Angulo has been suspended with pay. The doctor's attorney says these allegations "are totally inconsistent with her personal and professional life" and that law enforcement "jumped the gun in this case and filed charges that should" not have been. Dr. Gonzalez-Angulo's attorney also says she "is completely innocent" and says the district attorney's office has agreed to take a "fresh and careful look at the case".

Dr. Blumenscheinsurvived but he is said to still be suffering severe kidney damage".
