HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. -

A family of three, including an infant, was rescued after their Jeep was swept away into dangerous waters. Heavy rains tossed the SUV into a creek as the water almost completely submerged the vehicle on Sunday.

Milton Harrelson said that when raging water trapped his SUV where the creek crosses Wilson Road, he called his brother for help. Harrelson says his brother grabbed the SUV's bumper and tried to hold it back, but the floodwaters swept it away and jammed it on a clump up trees about 75 yards downstream.

"I heard my brother saying, ‘I'm drowning, I'm drowning.' and I looked outside the window and he was beside the Jeep pinned under some logs," said Harrelson.

Harrelson says he went to rescue his brother, leaving his fiancé, Amber, and their 11-month-old daughter Katherine in the vehicle.

In the meantime, Habersham County Sheriff's Deputy Jourdan McKay had responded to the 911 call. Someone told him there was a baby in the vehicle.

"All I could think about was my baby at home, so at that time, I jumped into the river and swam down to the vehicle and they had actually gotten the female and baby out," said McKay.

McKay says a firefighter was also onshore helping the family to safety.

Harrelson said he was grateful to deputy and firefighter for their help.

The creek flows into Wilson Lake, the main source of water for nearby Cornelia. City officials say there is no money to build a bridge there, so drivers must beware.

McKay says he was not injured other than a few cuts and scratches.

Harrelson said daughter, fiancé and brother all survived without injury.
