GDOT works to prevent flooding on interstate

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Wednesday's record rainfall stranded a few drivers near the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Some drivers at the airport exit on Interstate 85 stalled in water produced by heavy rain.

"We did have standing water and some motorists stuck in the car there. It's really important that if motorists are stuck in standing water that they don't get out of their car, that they call for help," said Natalie Dale of the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The DOT says overgrown trees dropped leaves and branches onto the interstate. That debris and litter on the road clogged the drains.

Maintenance crews spent Thursday cleaning drains to prevent any further flooding. They cut down overgrown trees and picked up litter.

"We don't want anyone to miss their flight. We don't want anyone delayed at their flight so, it is something we are keeping an eye on," Dale said.

Workers will monitor the interstates from their transportation management center. They ask anyone who sees a problem to call them.
