Police detain mentally-ill man who barricaded himself inside home

Posted: Updated:

Houston police have taken a 28-year-old man into custody after they say he tried to choke his mother and barricaded himself inside their apartment unit.

The argument, which took place before 11 a.m. Thursday at the Jade Forest Apartments on Clay Road near Philco Drive in northwest Houston, was related to a vehicle that the man wanted to borrow from his mother.

When patrol officers arrived to the apartment complex, they tried to enter the family's apartment unit with a key they were given, but officers heard a heavy object placed against the entry door.

Initial reports from police indicated the man threatened to commit suicide.

After the Houston Police Department SWAT team forced entry through the front door of the home, officers determined the man was within reach of four large kitchen knives. The officers issued verbal commands to him to surrender, but they were forced to deploy their Taser stun devices and beanbags to subdue him. Police escorted him to the neuro-psych unit at Ben Taub General Hospital. He will be charged with assault, a felony offense.

Emergency medical services staff checked on the condition of the mother and determined she was not seriously injured. She has spoken with officers.
