A wanted sex offender is found after allegedly breaking into a woman's home this morning. That woman was in for the fright of her life when deputies say the sex offender busted into her house and he didn't go in empty handed. "Very scary," says Damita Wyatt.
It's the stuff nightmares are made of. Wyatt was at home getting ready for work when she heard someone smash in her bedroom window. "I heard banging, clanging, broken glass," Wyatt explains. She immediately turned to her home alarm which sat silent. "I tried to put on my alarm. It wouldn't go on," she says.
Turns out the alarm and phone lines had been cut. She saw her chance to make a miraculous escape. "I grabbed my purse and ran out".
Wearing no pants, only underwear and allegedly carrying a loaded gun and a knife, registered sex offender Kevin Joseph Johnson was arrested shortly after deputies say he broke into Wyatt's Northwest Harris County home.
You see, after Wyatt ran out she called 911. Wyatt had been home alone but now as she stood outside with a neighbor she saw eyes peering out the window at her. "We saw the guy inside the house peeping out. We knew he was caught. He was surrounded by officers" Wyatt explains.
Fortunately Harris County Sheriff's Deputies arrived within minutes. "They surrounded the house and they brought in the dog and I guess the dog found the guy. He was hiding in the garage," says Wyatt.
Wyatt says 48-year-old Johnson ransacked her house and also broke out the glass in the patio door. She realizes if she hadn't escaped she could have been trapped inside her house and at the mercy of a rapist. "That really makes me scared".
You may consider a second layer of protection to go with your home alarm. Surveillance cameras are more affordable now and can be monitored from your smart phone, tablet or a computer. "You can also hook those up to a DVR system, as well, so it can be something that's recorded or you can monitor it and log in from other places remotely," says Magnolia Sales Manager Andrew Jones at the Galleria Best Buy. The guys there in the Magnolia area at Best Buy will help you select a system such as one camera Jones showed us which is set up in a dimly lit theatre room and it still captures a really clear picture. "You can see very clearly," explains Jones.
Many home alarms will sound if the wire is cut. This might be a good time to double check your system. There was actually a warrant out for Johnson's arrest for failing to update his address as a registered sex offender. He has a long criminal record including sexual assault of a child, theft and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Johnson was just recently released from jail and now the wanted sex offender is back behind bars.
As for Wyatt, "I just thank God everything turned out as well as it did".
