911 calls from Lake Lanier boating accident released

Posted: Updated:
HALL COUNTY, Ga. -

FOX 5 has obtained frantic 911 calls made in a boating accident over the weekend. The crash on Lake Lanier sent two people to the hospital.

DISPATCH: Hall County 911, what's the address of your emergency?
CALLER:  I don't know we're on Lake Lanier. Our boat quit and it's sinking and it's filled with water.

Fear was heard in the voice of a 20-year-old woman who called 911 from Lake Lanier. The Sea-Doo 16-foot boat she was in with a 23-year-old man had been badly damaged was sinking.

DISPATCH: You're cold?
CALLER:  It's so cold...it's freezing.
DISPATCH: We're trying to find you on the map, sweetie, your cell phone is hitting, OK?

Emergency responders used the cell phone pings to locate the boat by a buoy near the old federal campground.

The caller told 911 that she and her companion were injured.

CALLER:
We both broke some teeth, I think.
DISPATCH: Broken teeth? We've got people coming to you, OK? We've got a boat that's going to get out on the water.

The woman told 911 that they could be seen by their running lights. The dispatcher told the victim that her father was in his boat joining other emergency responders.

CALLER (the victim's father): I'm gonna try to head up there and see if I can see them...but you've got ...people are headed to them, right?
DISPATCH: Oh yeah, yeah.

The 911 tapes do not indicate who rescued the two.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources later said that an 18-year-old man, who is unidentified, turned himself in after telling his father he had hit something but did not hear or see anything. According to the 911 call, neither did the two injured people.

DISPATCH: What happened? Did you hit something?
CALLER: I don't know.

Both of the victims were treated and released from the hospital.

Georgia DNR officials said that the attorney general's office or the solicitor general's office will determine what, if any, charges will be filed against the 18-year-old.
