Keep Soft Skin & Supple Hair During Hot Summer Months in Pool

Posted: Updated:

It's that time of year when swimming pool covers are coming off.  With all of that swimming often comes a price of dry skin and hair.
The owner of Heights of Health, Tracy Wakefield-Southwick, says most people aren't aware of just how many chemicals are in pools.  "It's very important that after your children gets out of the pool, they rinse off and wash their hair and body, just to get those chemicals off.  Chlorine in the pool is a free-radical, so it causes a lot of anti-oxidant damage.  It's good to find an all-natural lotion or coconut oil or something high in anti-oxidants to spread on the skin to help it replenish those anti-oxidants that are depleted from just being in the pool water," explains Tracy.  She says this can make a big difference in how your, or your child's, skin handles the harsh chemicals.
She had another reminder that chlorine and the sun can also dry out your hair.  She's adamant about finding the right products.  "Find a good healthy shampoo without a lot of chemicals.  You have great big pores on your scalp, and you can absorb a lot of toxins through the scalp, so if you've thought about begin in a hot shower,  your pores open up from all the heat.  Those pores are opening up and absorbing all of those chemicals, and it's so close to the brain, to me - it's important to keep as many chemicals away from the skin and brain as possible," says Tracy.
