Rating New York's bridges

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York State has 17,000 highway bridges. There are some bad ones. The Tappan Zee Bridge, for example, is set to be replaced because of aging infrastructure.

The state rates bridges on a scale of 1 to 7. Anything below a 5 is considered deficient.

We pulled more than 35 pages of recent inspection data on bridges in the five boroughs. We found 710 bridges to be in the deficient category, including a span of the RFK Bridge that is rated 2.92 and a portion of the Brooklyn Bridge rated 2.94.

The low rating does not mean they are unsafe, but that some maintenance and rehab is needed.

Lucius Riccio, a former commissioner of the city's DOT, said that though nearly a third of city bridges are considered deficient, none is dangerous. He credited heavy investments in infrastructure over the last decade and insisted the city has some of the safest and strongest bridges in the country.
