Omar Morales feels lucky to be here for his son Joshua's 10th birthday on Monday. Morales was one of the passengers on board a USAir flight that made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport about 1 a.m. Saturday morning.
The flight had taken off from Philadelphia. It was a small twin-engine aircraft with 34 people on board.
As the pilots were preparing to land the landing gear malfunctioned. One pilot came out of the cockpit with a flashlight, looked out the window, and said there was a problem with the landing gear.
Morales said the pilots circled the airport twice apparently trying to dislodge the landing gear. But when that didn't work, on the third try they had to make an emergency landing.
Morales then called his wife and texted her "emergency landing. love you and the boys."
The plane landed on its belly and the cabin filled with smoke. When it came to a stop, everyone clapped, Morales said.
No one was injured. Authorities are investigating.
