Tips to keep your kids safe at the pool

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

When the pools open on Memorial Day weekend, it's going to be hard to keep your kids away from the water.  But before summer gets into full swing, we've got some tips to help you make sure your children stay safe at the pool.

Floaties—which are also known as water wings—are the most common product on the market, but Matt Murphy of Atlanta Swimming Services say it's also the most dangerous.  Murphy says they can leak air or come off of slippery little arms.  Instead, he suggests you opt for a life vest.

And those pool noodles you find at most dollar stores?  They're a toy—and they shouldn't be used by children who aren't strong swimmers.  Murphy says they can be useful for parents who might not be strong swimmers because they can be used as a reaching device to help a struggling swimmer.

Every pool in Georgia is required to have a shepherd's crook and a ring buoy.  Murphy says you should keep them close by at all times because the closer they are, the quicker you can help someone in distress.

Murphy says if you go to a lake or a beach this summer, you should take a reaching tool with you.  It can be as simple as a mop or a broom handle—something that can allow you to help someone else struggling in the water.

If you’re a pet owner, you’ve probably been there. You lean down to say hello and, before you know it, your dog has planted a big wet one right on your mouth. But a UGA Vet says that “kiss” may come with a downside.
