Whether you're planning to do a lot of swimming or just soaking up the sun, summer can do a real number on your hair. So, how can you protect it?

Dermatologist Dr. Rutledge Forney says your best protection is to slap on a hat. If that's not your style, pick up a UV protective spray, shampoo or conditioner that will keep the sun from frying your hair.
      
Swimmers, beware of chlorine hair which can turn lighter, and color-treated locks green. If you don't wear a swim cap, try wetting your hair with tap water and then spraying a leave-in conditioner on it before you get in the water.

"One of the most important things as soon as you get out of the pool is to rinse off.  Try to get that chlorine off of your skin, and to rinse your hair off.  If you color your hair, chlorine can be a problem, too," said Forney.

Salt water can quickly dry your hair out. Forney says be sure and rinse off your hair as quickly as you can once you get out of the water.
       
Forney says if you like to exercise, don't sweat a little summer sweat.   

"I think the trade-off between being sweat and outside and enjoying yourself is one you just have to accept. It doesn't permanently damage your hair. Sweat has no negative impact, long term, but it will mess your hair up," said Forney.

If you have dry hair, apply a natural oil like Neem oil to coat and condition your hair when you swim.
      
If you struggle with frizzy hair, pick up a silicone-based serum to keep your hair from absorbing too much moisture. And if your hair gets greasy, try washing it daily and lightening up on your conditioner.
