Hoboken residents, mayor tired of flooding

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Hoboken residents say they're fed up with the constant flooding. Superstorm Sandy left the city underwater, then there were water main breaks this spring, and on Wednesday flash flooding happened.

Chris Escudero's restaurant, Legal Beans, has been flooded four times in the past four years. The worst was during Superstorm Sandy.

"I wish I could say it's my spirit to go on, I have that spirit, but out of necessity," Escudero said. "The last 5 months I've been going to Home Depot and maxing out my cards to basically get my business back open."

Escudero is one of many Hoboken business owners and residents derailed by the floods.

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer and Sen. Bob Menendez on Friday announced a disaster preparedness bill. They're asking the state for $126 million to deal with the problem that just won't go away.

"The western side of the city used to be marshland and some parts of it are below sea level, so when we have high tide and heavy rainfall like we did just a few days ago, we get flooding," Zimmer said. She said that adding three pumps to the waterfront and adding floodwalls would be part of the solution.

"We're in the midst of buying land across the western side of the city, trying to get additional grant money to create detention basins like physically large bathtubs that would hold more of the water," she said, adding that getting the money. She said that because you can't raise buildings, you have to start with rebuilding the infrastructure.
