NYC to remove PCBs from schools ahead of schedule

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - New York City says it will speed up replacing school lights containing toxic PCBs.

The New York Times says the city said Wednesday it could complete the job "well before the previously announced timetable of 2021."

The city declined to say more, citing a pending lawsuit filed by activists in 2011 demanding it move faster to remove lighting tainted with PCBs.

PCBs are suspected of causing cancer and other diseases.

City officials say nearly 800 of 1,400 school buildings could have PCB-containing light fixtures. They agreed in 2011 to remove the lights within 10 years, saying the timetable would allow them to more easily absorb the cost.

The Department of Education says work has been completed at 92 schools. At least 105 buildings are scheduled ffor work this summer.
