Members of a portable church are reeling after a trailer containing equipment worth about $15,000 was stolen in Barrow County.
Story Church is so new that it doesn't have a building, alter pews or fancy stained glass windows yet.
"This is our life. We're a portable church so we set up and tear down every Sunday morning," said church pastor Jared Mehrle.
Every week, the church belongings are loaded up into two trailers filled with everything needed for worship on Sunday mornings. Until this Sunday night, when one of the trailers was stolen.
"That was the one that had all our expensive stuff in it. [The other trailer has] mostly children's ministry supplies, so they stole about $13,00 worth of equipment plus a $2,000 trailer," Mehrle said.
Mehrle says the trailer was filled with everything from the church stage to the baby cribs to mics and sound equipment -- all now gone.
"It's really upsetting. It's disappointing. I understand people have need and I really hope that the person who did this is operating out of need and not out of greed," Mehrle said.
The church kept the trailer parked at a self-storage facility, where the thieves apparently broke through the gate and then drove off with the trailer
"We're going to do the work that God put us here to do, whether we have sound equipment or cribs for the infants or not," said church member Stephanie Glenn.
Just two months old, the church of around 100 members meets at an elementary school. For such a small congregation, the theft is a big hit.
Still, they plan on having service on Sunday, no matter what.
"I would love it if they would touch their heart just to, hey no questions asked, you can bring it back. We're not searching for justice. We're not going to press charges. We just want our stuff back, honestly," said Mehrle.
The church has partnered with the local Goodwill so that if the person who stole the trailer brings it into that Goodwill, they will be returned to the church with no questions asked.
The church is accepting donations to replace the equipment on its website. Click here for more information.
