ATLANTA -

Atlanta city officials paused to commemorate the sacrifice of the city's police officers on Tuesday.  Since the inception of the police force, a total of 81 officers have given their lives in the line of duty.

Tuesday marked the 22nd Annual Atlanta Police Memorial Service.  It's a day where officers pause to remember their fallen heroes, and they're joined by surrounding departments as well as federal agencies who return to support them.

Chief George Turner was joined by keynote speaker Dr. Raphael Warnock, senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church.  The memorial honored fallen officers including Richard Halford and Shawn Smiley, who died in a fatal helicopter crash during a search for a missing child in 2012.  Also in 2012, Senior Officer Gail Thomas was struck and killed by a drunk driving suspect.

The memorial got started in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy signed the Police Memorial Day into law.
