Mario Williams files Lawsuit over engagement ring

Posted: Updated:

Former Houston Texans Linebacker Mario Williams now of the Buffalo Bills is suing his ex-fiancée in an attempt to regain an estimated $785,000 engagement ring. According to the suit, he gave her the ring last February just before he signed a $100 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. Then in January she broke off the engagement with no reason given for the breakup. It's commonly referred to as the conditional gift rule.

But Texas law is pretty clear. If the woman breaks the engagement, she has to return the ring. However, if the man breaks the engagement, she gets to keep the ring.

Williams also paid $108,000 in living expenses with an American Express card and brought her $230,000 in luxury items. Interesting fact, the suit does not ask for a return of those items or reimbursement of the credit card charges, just the ring.
