ATLANTA -

A 22-year-old old African lion died on Monday, Zoo Atlanta officials announced.

Veterinarians chose to euthanize Farasi due to age-related issues they said "were compromising his quality of life."

Farasi was North America's oldest pedigreed male African lion, according to zoo officials.

"Farasi was a very special member of the Zoo Atlanta family. We're all saddened by his loss, but we're fortunate to have shared just a portion of his long and colorful life," said Dwight Lawson, PhD, Deputy Director, in a state released by the zoo. "The fact that he lived to such an advanced age is certainly a testament to him, but it's also a tribute to the animal care professionals who provided him with outstanding care and enrichment during his years with us."

The lion was born on September 9, 1990 at Kruger National Park in South Africa, according to zoo officials. He received care as a cub at De Wildt Cheetah Centre after he was apparently orphaned or abandoned. He moved to San Diego Zoo Safari Park before being transferred to Zoo Atlanta in June 2000.
