Band of US Air Force Reserve plays swan song

Posted: Updated:

MACON, Ga. (AP) - The Band of the U.S. Air Force Reserve at Robins Air Force Base has played its final public performance.

Band members performed with the Macon Symphony Youth Orchestra at Mercer University on Saturday. The band is being deactivated as part of the Air Force's cost-cutting measures.

The conductor, 1st Lt. Thomas Gamboa, told The Telegraph that the concert was a little difficult and bittersweet because the band has had a good relationship with the area.

The conductor of the Macon Youth Symphony, Jonathan Baker, said the Air Force musicians are as good as those in any symphony orchestra. He said the Macon area will miss their involvement in music programs ranging from churches to schools.

The band was formed in 1941 and has been at Robins since 1961.
