ATLANTA (AP) - Clayton County has found itself in an unusual legal situation over Sheriff Victor Hill. Hill took office Jan. 1 while under indictment, and the Georgia Sheriffs' Association says it's not aware of any similar cases in the state.

Hill was indicted as a private citizen in February 2012, but the charges stem from a previous term as sheriff. His case hasn't gone to trial.

After the trial, the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council will complete its investigation into the allegations. The council could take disciplinary action up to revoking Hill's peace officer certification.

State law says a sheriff must be certified as a peace officer within six months of taking office. Hill's certification was suspended when he was indicted. Hill's lawyer says that shouldn't affect his position as sheriff.
