Police suspect drugs in death of Kris Kross rapper

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Police believe rapper Chris Kelly was using heroin and cocaine on the day of his death. One-half of the duo Kris Kross, Kelly died Wednesday after being found unresponsive in his Fulton County home.  He was 34.

Kris Kross achieved their most fame with the song "Jump," which was #1 on the Billboard charts back in 1992 when the duo were in their early teens.

Akini Jeffery, a producer of the morning show on Streetz 94.5-FM, was friends with Kelly at Camp Creek Middle School.

"I actually saw the process of him becoming popular and the process of him becoming a star," said Jeffrey.

Kelly still performed occasionally, but his focus was producing other rappers.

Just hours before he was found dead in his south Fulton County house, Kelly talked to Jeffery.

Jeffrey recorded the two-minute conversation, which he now calls eerie.

Kelly: "I had told you though, you know how I party."
Jeffrey: "Man, I don't want to hear that man. You know I don't want to hear that bro."
Kelly: "I know man, I apologize."

The radio show host thought Kelly sounded drunk, and may have been at a party, even though it was early in the morning.

"Just hearing the people in the background, I was like, there's really a whole lot going on for 7:45 in the morning," said radio host Rashan Ali.

According to the officer who responded to Kelly's house seven hours later, Kelly's mother "stated that the night before Kelly was out and had taken a mixture of heroin and cocaine."

She said she "brought Kelly home to recover from his drug use and had done this several times in the past," the police report said.

She said that he passed out at 3 p.m. and never woke up.

The police report says that Kelly's uncle state that he "had an extensive history of drug abuse."

Jeffrey said he was surprised to hear of his friend's alleged drug use.

"He may have had a drink or two from time to time, but nothing extensive. Nothing that would cause any alert or alarm," said Jeffrey.

Investigators said that the autopsy showed no physical cause of death. They are awaiting toxicology results. Those results could take up to three weeks to be released.
