Common Core standards facing criticism

Posted: Updated:

Public schools across the country are transitioning to the new Common Core standards that will change the way math, reading and writing are taught. But it is facing a lot of criticism nationwide, including in New York.

American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten, a big supporter of Common Core, said at an Association for a Better New York breakfast that the new standards are a must for schools to ensure a better and equal education for all students.

But the shift to the Common Core standards has been tough for many schools. Teachers and parents in New York are frustrated by this year's tests because they say students are being judged based on curriculum that has not yet been adequately taught.

Weingarten said she recognizes that Common Core is in trouble and said she is concerned that the states are rushing out tests without training teachers properly. In order to deal with the backlash, she is calling for a moratorium to give everyone enough time to prepare.

While there is support for Common Core, right now several states have bills to repeal the program. None have passed yet.
