NYC hotel vouchers ending for many storm victims

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Since Superstorm Sandy struck the city has been housing hundreds of families displaced by the storm. But starting Tuesday, the free hotel stays are ending for a lot of people, including some who say they have no place to go.

Sahem Abdalla's Staten Island rental apartment was wrecked by Sandy. Since the storm she has been homeless. She initially stayed with friends. Since February she has lived at a Ramada Inn thanks to vouchers from the city. But Monday is her last night here.

Abdalla, an Arabic tutor who worked at home, said when the storm flooded her apartment it also put her out of work. She said that when you have no permanent address it seems like you're unstable so employers don't hire you. She has been getting assistance from the city's Department of Homeless Services, which continues to pay for hotel stays for hundreds of families impacted by Sandy six months after the storm.

The hotel vouchers expire for nearly 200 of those households on April 30.

Commissioner Seth Diamond explained in a statement: "The City developed a generous and intensive program for Sandy households... Households who rejected housing options or were not eligible for public housing will have their hotel stays end tomorrow, as scheduled."

The agency said it will continue to help place Sandy victims.

Abdalla said she is not sure why her stay is running out, she just doesn't know where to go. She said that Tuesday she will end up in a shelter.

Some Sandy victims covered by FEMA's transitional sheltering assistance program will have their hotel stays extended. The governor announced that extension will go through May 28.
