Superstorm Sandy: 6 months later

Posted: Updated:

Parts of New Jersey and New York remain a work in progress six months after Superstorm Sandy caused billions of dollars in damage.

Gov. Chris Christie will be in Highlands, where he'll visit businesses and make a storm-related announcement with U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has paid out $387.4 million in housing grants and $263 million to communities and nonprofit groups in New Jersey since the storm hit in October.

Reconstruction continues on the Jersey shore's tourist attractions, with the goal of having most boardwalks reopened in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

It's taking homeowners longer to rebuild as they await insurance payments and word from federal and state authorities over new flood maps that govern the price of flood insurance.

In Long Beach, Long Island, ground was broken on a new 2-mile boardwalk on Saturday.

Congress approved more than $60B in relief aid.
