You may have heard the phrase "Go Big or Go Home." But how about the phrase "Go Pig or Go Home?"
That was the title of a recent cooking competition that brought together 22 of Houston's top chefs, all competing for the title of King of Suckling Pig.
The 2nd annual Go Pig or Go Home throwdown was sponsored by Kata Robata and executive Chef Manabu Horiuchi.
Houston food blogger Mai Pham attended the event and talked to many of the participants.
"We love to bring everyone together for this," Chef Horiuchi said. "There are so many things you can do with suckling pig."
And he wasn't kidding. More than 600 people attended the event, and they got to sample everything from traditional Chinese roasted pork to suckling pig pizza. Some of the other dishes included a pork belly raman bowl, whole roasted suckling pig, and roasted pig topped with fresh sea urchin.
Chef Ronnie Killen of Killen's Steakhouse took first prize in the judges' competition with a combo plate that included pulled pork, pork ribs and a pork dippin' dots dessert. Chef Mark Gabriel Medina of Soma Sushi took first place in the People's Choice Award, with the pork ramen bowl.
