Saturday set for prescription drug take-back day

Georgians have the chance to safely dispose of expired and unused prescription drugs this weekend. Designated drop-off sites will accept the old medications on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

The federal government says more than 6 million people abuse prescription drugs and 20,000 die from overdoses annually.

Authorities say some people inadvertently become a source for illicit drug use by leaving old medications unattended.

Like many, Jill Wiltshire has been unsure what to do with old prescription drugs.

"My mother passed three years ago and had a lot of prescription drugs and had no idea what to do with them. So I didn't know, you know, a drop-off point I think would be great," said Wiltshire.

Saturday's prescription drug take back day will offer collection sites where expired and unused medication may be dropped off.

The program is conducted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, along with state and local law enforcement agencies.

"People don't view the drugs that doctors have given to them as unsafe to others. But they are," said Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens.

The DEA says more than half of prescription drug abusers get their drugs from family or friends.

"Whether it was from, you know, a surgical procedure they had or a dental procedure they had, they fill the prescription and use very little of it and it sits up in the medicine cabinet and we need to get rid of this stuff and need to get it out of the houses," said Harry Sommers of the Atlanta Field Division of the DEA.
The drug take back day will be in operation from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
