Brookhaven hiring police officers

Posted: Updated:

Georgia's newest city is hiring. Brookhaven is starting its own police department and plans to staff it with 50 officers.

The department's new police chief, Gary Yandura, was sworn in on Tuesday.  He says officers will make from $38,500 to $55,000 a year. Yandura said the job includes an attractive benefits package that he hopes will lure top officers from the metro area.

Also included is a housing incentive that starts at $400 a month the first year and diminishes the longer the officers are on the force.

In addition to the housing allowance, there are other perks. If you are smoke-free, the city will pay 90 percent of your healthcare.

"We plan to hire good quality people. We've been very fortunate on that because we've got an overabundance of applicants right now.  We can pick the cream of the crop," Yandura said.

Brookhaven is now paying DeKalb County police $500,000 a month to patrol their 12 square miles.

If all goes well, Brookhaven officers should be patrolling these streets by late summer.

Brookhaven officials say they have already had 100 applicants in just 5 days. Sixteen candidates have already completed their interviews. Click here for information on how to apply.
