Lower Manhattan Security Initiative: a look inside

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York City's Lower Manhattan Security Initiative is a $150 million operation center with a 40-foot TV screen. It features monitoring and computer analysis of information from 911 calls to abandoned packages. The videos are from 4,000 public and private surveillance cameras set up south of 59th Street in Manhattan.

Half the surveillance cameras are public and half private cameras. Representatives from the police to private security sit in the room together to discuss information immediately. Is this big brother watching?

After private surveillance cameras in Boston led to the killing and arrest of suspects just three days after the marathon bombings we expect more cameras, especially private ones, in New York.

There are few calls for privacy concerns.

The bottom line is expect to see more and more of the security surveillance cameras as combating terror becomes a permanent part of the American landscape.

Mayor Bloomberg says we may lose privacy but says we will save lives and keep other freedoms.
