Fallen officers' names added to memorial wall

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -

Local communities paused on Monday to remember two officers killed in the line of duty.  The names of Henry County Officer Elgin Daniel and Clayton County Officer Sean Callahan were added to the Georgia Police Officer Memorial Wall.

Daniel died in November after being struck by a driver on North Henry Boulevard in Stockbridge.  His fellow officered remembered him for his service up until the very end.

Daniel was helping a stranded motorist when another car hit and killed him.

"It's a tragedy for me and my family. You always expect that call. He has been on the force numerous years, but it doesn't change how you feel when a loved one is taken because he was my husband.  He was an officer, but he was my husband. My soul mate," said Teresa Daniel, the officer's wife.

Police say the placement on the wall isn't just a memorial to the officers whose names appear on it, but an acknowledgement of the risks all officers face.

"It also reminds police officers of their own mortality and the fact that this is a dangerous business and, at any time,  your life could be taken away," said Henry County Police Chief Keith Nichols.

Family, friends and colleagues who paused to see Daniel's name etched on the memorial hope that maybe in some small way, their hero is getting his due.

"It means so much to me that they would come out and remember his this way and to have his name on this moving wall, it's just an honor to see his colleagues remember him this way," said Teresa Daniel.

Callahan was shot and killed after responding to a domestic dispute at a Stockbridge hotel in December.

"I miss him so much. Sometimes I can't believe he's gone," said Darlene Callahan Rogers, the officer's mother.

Officer Callahan was just 24 when he was killed.

"I ask myself sometimes if he knew what was going happen that day if he would have come to work and I think the answer is yes. He would have because he knew what it meant," said Darlene Callahan Rogers.

More than 600 officers' names now appear on that memorial wall.
