15 simple things you can do to keep your pet safe

Those of us who have pets know they are beloved members of our family. However, there are times we don't think about all the simple things which could get them into trouble.

Pet expert Charlotte Reed has 15 simple tips to keep your pet safe and out of trouble.

  • Make sure all doors, including patio entrances, are closed.
  • Make sure any pet door is the right size and closes properly.
  • Keep any dangerous food, such as chocolate, out of range of your dog.
  • Keep medication, dietary supplements and antibiotics high and in a safe place.
  • Make sure all the garbage in the house is secure an inaccessible.
  • Check that all cleaning supplies are out of reach.
  • Keep all dangerous objects off the floor and out of reach.
  • Close the lid on the toilet bowl and stop using any sanitizing flush products.
  • Put away all sharp objects that might cut your dog's mouth or paws.
  • Put childproof latches on all cabinets containing hazardous material.
  • Dog-proof any poisonous plants or place them where your dog can't get at them.
  • Pick up any toys, such as string, that could be dangerous if swallowed.
  • Place any pesticides out of reach or be doubly sure to replace them with non-toxic substances.
  • Make sure to keep your dog away from litter boxes used by other pets.
  • Make sure your dog has some toys to chew on.
