Income tax filing day

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The deadline to file your income tax return is Midnight tonight. If you can't get your taxes done in time, the Internal Revenue Service requires tax payers file an extension and estimate the amount owed.

Many post offices across the country are extending hours to accommodate last-minute filers.

Some of the most overlooked deductions are the value of the mileage on your car for trips to job interviews, out-of-pocket medical expenses and non-cash charitable donations.

Make sure you have records of what you've earned.

If the IRS feels you've underreported your income based on your refund check or deductions or previous year tax return, you could be audited.

The filing extension is until October.

If you were impacted by superstorm Sandy and received money from FEMA or were reimbursed by your insurance company, you should file a casualty loss form, according to the NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs.

"For victims of superstorm Sandy, tax preparer H & R Block is offering a waiver for the casualty loss form," said Kay Sarlin, Associate Commissioner, Dept. of Consumer Affairs.

All New Yorkers making up to $57K annually, can file their taxes online at the city's website: NYC.gov/taxprep
