A Long Island woman is accused of faking cancer so she could get donations to support her heroin addiction, authorities said.

Brittany Ozarowski, formerly of Selden, pleaded not guilty Thursdayin court in Central Islip to fraud and other charges.

A judge set her bail at $75,000 cash, or $150,000 bond. The D.A. wanted bail set higher, but her attorney George Duncan objected, saying she was accused of non-violent crimes and didn't deserve a higher bail amount, the AP reported.

"This was a despicable scam," Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said on Wednesday. "There was no cancer, no chemotherapy, no radiation, and no medical bills. There was just heroin."

Authorities said she left donor jars at Nassau and Suffolk county businesses and also hit up supermarket shoppers for money.

A store owner bought T-shirts for a fundraiser. Spota said small-business owners donated over $600 in gift certificates.

He said she even established a PayPal account and a website with a banner that pleaded, "Help Save My Life."

Spota said flyers falsely claimed the defendant had ovarian, stomach, bone or brain cancer and had "few options left."

The winds will turn to the west on Thursday and that may be enough to push afternoon highs to near 98 degrees. Heat index values will be in the 102-108 range and that's just plain hot! There will be a 30% chance for a few storms, but most of us won't get any rain at all.
