Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers is always looking for more volunteers, with more than a quarter of a million senior citizens in Harris County they can use them!
Currently serving 28 zip codes in the southwest Houston area they primarily provide mobility support for the elderly, trips to the doctors, grocery shopping, drug store runs, those kind of things. Some of their volunteers will do minor home repair and they've started a practice called "friendly calling" where volunteers and even some of the care receivers themselves call daily to check in on one another.
Their motto is "key to your neighbor's independence" and that's truly what it's all about helping a generation of Houstonians retain as much independence as they can.
the office space is provided by Christ Church Presbyterian all volunteer interfaith caregivers pays is their phone and internet costs. But it's truly an interfaith group with volunteers coming from a coalition of churches.
Executive Director Anna Pieniazek tells us that it's an individualized program for both the care givers and the receivers. Volunteers can work twice a year or 5 days a week it's all up to them
Anna started working at volunteer interfaith caregivers part time several years ago, after caring for her mother; " it's so nice to be able to do something to help people and to see it and again I hadn't thought of the needs that were out there until I went through it myself." Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers-Southwest strives to build community through living faith, by helping frail and elderly people in southwest Houston remain independent, seek health care and preserve their quality of life.
One of the care receivers summed up the value of the volunteers, " they're god's angels. God doesn't come down to take old ladies to the doctors, he sends his angels, god's helpers on earth."
