We're Texans, and that means we like Tex-Mex and we like tequila. A gastropub on the edge of The Heights is putting a different twist on both those things.
When you first walk in to El Gran Malo you are greeted by a huge cabinet, some might call it an altar, filled with icons, skulls, and, most importantly, jars and jars filled with infused tequila.
Houston food writer Amber Ambrose recently visited El Gran Malo to check it out.
"Texans love tequila, and we were kind of surprised that no one was really doing anything with infused tequilas here in Houston," said El Gran Malo co-owner Steve Sharma.
"We have all kinds of infusions, things like peanuts, pecan cayenne, beef jerky, red beets, strawberries, and seasonal items like watermelon," Sharma told Ambrose.
The tequilas can be served straight up or mixed into margaritas. But, it's not just the tequila that has a twist.
"We have elevated the food into what we call gastro-cantina," Sharma said. Some examples of that include a Peruvian-style ceviche, pork belly tacos, and goat-cheese stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon.
El Gran Malo is located at 2307 Ella Blvd.
