G-Day signals Georgia's defense may be fine

Posted: Updated:

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Even with the need to replace several key defenders, Saturday's G-Day game signaled that Georgia's defense may be fine next year.

The Blacks defeated the Reds 23-17 in a come-from-behind win. The Blacks featured the starting defense against the Reds, loaded with most of the veterans returning on 1 of the nation's most effective defenses.

Quarterback Aaron Murray, who completed 12 of 18 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, says the defense has improved with every practice. He says he expects the defenders to carry that momentum into summer camp.

Among the defensive players who will need to be replaced are All-American Jarvis Jones, safety Bacarri Rambo, linebacker Alec Ogletree and lineman John Jenkins.

Head coach Mark Richt enters the season with inexperienced players in the secondary, but he says he has been impressed with the play of his young safeties.

It is the year of the rookie in the NASCAR Spring Cup Series. There are eight drivers vying for Rookie of the Year honors, but even those guys seem old when compared with the driver we found here.
