Allegations of hazing and abuse have sidelined an entire local soccer team. An investigation has been launched into alleged hazing rituals against the Gordon Central High School Warriors.
The sheriff says there could be more than a dozen possible victims over the course of more than a year.
Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston said in a statement, "Thus far the investigation has revealed over a dozen victims and a dozen perpetrators. The events have involved battery and other inappropriate conduct."
The school principal has canceled the rest of the boys' soccer team's season. Many of the players are now under criminal investigation for hazing.
The sheriff's office says it was a battery report by a team member back on March 16 that started their investigation, which soon involved more students on the junior varsity and varsity soccer teams and more alleged incidents going back a year. They've interviewed several players and also gathered electronic evidence such as emails and social media posts.
Misty McBee's daughter plays soccer in Gordon County, and she immediately set her down and talked about hazing when she heard about the allegations.
"We explained to her what it was and asked questions -- a lot of questions -- to make sure there wasn't any sign of that going on,' McBee said.
The sheriff's office says that it could be a couple of weeks before they turn the investigation over to the district attorney to file charges.
