Isakson: Washington 'very close' to funding harbor

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson says plans to deepen the Savannah harbor are "very, very close" to getting the funding from Washington needed to start dredging.

Isakson told reporters Wednesday during a visit to the Port of Savannah he's working hard to get the $652 million project under way and plans to bring it up during a dinner with President Barack Obama next week.

Savannah and other East Coast ports are scrambling for permits and funding to deepen their shipping channels so they will have room for supersized cargo ships expected to begin using an expanded Panama Canal in 2015.

The nation's fourth-largest container port in Savannah won federal approval last year to deepen the river channel. But the Washington budget crisis has made it tough to get federal funding.
