The city of Brookhaven doesn't have a police department yet, but may have found its first crime fighter. The mayor of the metro area's newest city found himself in the middle of the action last Friday when he helped foil a robbery.
Mayor Max Davis says he saw a woman chasing three people out of the Dollar Store on Johnson Ferry Road and followed them. He gave a description to a police officer he ran into and then continued to look for the suspects as he made his way a few blocks away to a Publix.
Davis says he spotted the suspects again at the MARTA stop getting on the bus. Using the description from the mayor, police were able to catch up with the bus and arrest the suspects.
"It's part of being a citizen. If my children of my business was being robbed or people were stealing out of it, I would expect my citizens and friends and neighbors would do the same thing for me. It's just second nature, it should be for everybody," Davis said.
The city of Brookhaven expects to have their own officers on the streets by summertime, and Davis says residents will notice a difference.
"The great thing about Brookhaven is that we now have our own department, response time is going to be greatly reduced because we're going to have police in our own boundaries and they're going to be able to get to things much quicker," Davis said.
The mayor says his quick action shows the positive impact regular citizens can have just by keeping an eye on each other.
Brookhaven's new police chief was previously the chief in Hiram and says he plans to start hiring immediately.
