Fire department honors Atlanta's first black firefighters

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The Atlanta Fire Department honored the city's first African-American firefighters at a ceremony on Monday. This marks the 50th anniversary of integration at the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.

Back in 1963, 16 African-Americans were assigned to Fire Station 16. That station still stands as a symbol of the historic event.

The hiring of African-American firefighters was Atlanta's first step toward full integration of the city's workforce.
