Rice Univ. program rewards scholastic military veterans

HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

Rice University has announced the first recipient of a generous scholarship geared toward attracting veterans to study for their MBA.

The Military Scholar Program started as a conversation, a year ago, about what efforts were made to encourage veterans on campus.

The result was a commitment, expected to be worth millions of dollars, to award qualified veterans full-ride scholarships to attend the Jones Graduate School of Business.

Rice grad, Navy vet and Houston investment banker, John Dennis, helped make the pitch to donors who will help put up the money and says it is an important obligation to vets.

"There's a lot of good military vets: officers, enlisted, female, male, that are coming out of the military," says Dennis, "How can we attract them to Rice university; Rice business school; and, ultimately, to Houston, Texas?"

The first scholarship recipient, former naval officer Ivor Kristiansen, will begin studying for his MBA in the fall.
